About Our Club. . .
Lions Clubs International is the largest service organization in the world, with over a million members in some 45,000 plus Clubs in 197 countries and geographical areas across the world. Since established in 1917, “We Serve” has been the motto of this organization. Lions across the world serve their clubs, their community, their country, and their fellow man in any and every way imaginable.
The original Granby Lions Club was formed 28 May 1941. It served the community for many years, but was eventually disbanded.
The current Granby Lions Club was chartered 24 April 1984 with sponsorship by Aurora Lions Club. This Club has now served for over 25 years.
When asked what they do, a Lion finds it hard to answer. There are so many things they have done over the years, it is hard to remember. Following are some of the things the Granby Lions Club has provided for this community:
*Street-Name Signs in Granby
*House-numbers in Granby (This is ongoing)
*Hearing Tests for elementary, middle, and high school students at East Newton
*Amblyopic testing for Granby Head Start
*Purchase of glasses and vision tests for East Newton needy students
*Purchase of glasses and vision tests for area needy adults
*Purchase of Christmas Decorations for Granby City Streets
*Newton County Foster Kids Christmas Party
*amblyopic testing for Head Start and Kindergarten students,
*free glasses & exams, and diabetic supplies for those who cannot afford them,
*support for Lions Sight Research, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and many other sight related projects,
*sponsorship of two students each to Boys State and Girls State,
*donations to Granby Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and Granby Youth Soccer League,
*annual re-planting of Granby Flower Barrels to help beautify our community.
Funds must be raised to pay for these accomplishments.
Following are some of the fundraisers we held or continue to hold:
* For 26 years, Granby Lions Club (with help from the Forum Club in past years) has sponsored a Pancake Breakfast on the Saturday morning of Old Mining Town Days celebration (OMTD). Originally held at the Baptist church, it is now held at the Community Building Annex. Approximately 200 people attend each year.
* Since its inception in 1984, the 5-K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk has been run on Saturday morning of OMTD. Originally run South from the Baptist Church, it now begins in front of City Hall and goes north and west out Old Highway E. An average of 100 runners/walkers attend each year. Each entrant receives a free pancake breakfast and a free t-shirt. Trophies are awarded to the top three in each classification.
*Tax-deductible private and business donations are also gratefully accepted. Suggestions for fundraisers would be appreciated.
If you see a need in the community, please contact a Lion.
